Al Phillips - A Brief History
Catalyst Music, Inc.
Director/President
Al grew up in a
Christian home. His parents were in ministry during his early years,
planting and nurturing churches in Florida, North Carolina and the
west coast. They settled in Tacoma, WA, where Al and his sisters
attended high school. Foss High School was a new, experimental high
school, which passed students at their own pace. Al exceeded all his
required classes and soon began to excel in his musical studies, so
that by the time he graduated, he was being tutored and mentored
exclusively by his music teachers, writing and arranging pieces for
the school jazz band and vocal ensemble. Al’s natural abilities were
recognized by his teachers and he was selected to attend the
Washington State sponsored high achievement music seminars in
electronic music and stage band arranging.
Al’s mother was
(and still is) a well-established piano teacher in Tacoma. With his
parents’ support, he experimented with different musical instruments
during his Jr. High and High school years. He began with trumpet in
the fifth grade and then began playing bass in a professional jazz
band at the age of 14. He easily transferred to piano through his
knowledge and understanding of music theory. Al was offered several
music scholarships during his senior year, although, he chose God’s
leading to move to Los Angeles at age 18.
He immediately
began attending the First Baptist Church of Van Nuys. This was a
cutting-edge, musical church for its time. Many first-call LA
musicians were already a part of this professional music program. Al
soon became involved in the music and traveled around the world with
their music group mission teams (Certain Sounds). It was here where he met his wife,
married and began a family.
At the age of
21, Al was the youngest man in the history of the church to be offered
the position of deacon. The call on his life was recognized and his
dedication to the Lord was evident to all. He soon came on staff at
the church and was responsible for overseeing and training for all the
technical sound engineering including sound reinforcement, recording
and audio for television broadcasts. It was also contacts from the
church which led him to a managerial position at Sparrow Records,
where he learned the workings of a Christian record label and
distribution company. He managed upwards of fifty employees as
Warehouse/Facilities Director for five years.
Al felt the need
to know more and to establish more knowledge in the direction God had called
him. He attended Sound Master Recording Engineer School in North
Hollywood; a notable school for training and education in the field of
music recording. After graduation Al left his job at Sparrow Records
and went to work at Hollywood Sound Recorders as an engineer. He began
at the bottom of the rung as a "gopher" then moved to "second engineer". Al worked very hard,
and within the first year, he had tripled his salary. Within two
years, Al was the top paid, first-call, "chief recording engineer" for the
prestigious studio. He soon became independent, being called to work
on different projects at studios throughout the LA area (see Studio
Projects).
Ten years of
working in the Los Angeles music industry was an incredible training
period for Al. In 1992 he began to sense the further call of God. He
and his wife, Cathy, began to seek the Lord for this new direction.
They were led to move their family to Lake of the Ozarks, MO in 1994.
This area is hidden, away from the main-stream music world. Lake of
the Ozarks is a resort area, a creative environment, conducive to new
and independent ideas in music.
Al’s desire is
to become a catalyst to help develop artistic and spiritual growth
in local and regional artists as well as work with churches and
their worship teams to help them produce quality worship projects.
During these
past 14 years in Missouri, Al and his family have become a part of a church;
"Lake Family Church" (formerly- "Heartland Worship Center"). In the past, as Worship
Arts Coordinator for the church, Al has been instrumental in breaking
ground in worship and the arts, while recording over 50 local and
regional artists at Catalyst Music. Through his work as a Producer,
Engineer, Musician, Worship Leader, his reputation
and integrity have become well known in the community and beyond.
